Officials in Canyon County said this week they have found a tenth positive test for West Nile virus this year in area mosquito traps. The most recent positive trap was found July 18 near the intersection of Dixie River and Pinto Roads in Caldwell.
Canyon, Gem, Owyhee and Twin Falls Counties have all recently reported trapping mosquitoes with West Nile virus.
When a positive result is found, the local abatement district schedules nighttime "fogging" treatment and insecticide in the area of the positive trap.
A follow-up test of trapped mosquitoes from the same positive location in Canyon County returned negative for West Nile virus on Wednesday.
Canyon County Abatement District Director Ed Burnett said the proactive treatment has helped to prevent the spread of the virus from mosquitoes to any humans this year.
In a statement, the Southwest District Health office reminded the public that the best way to prevent contracting West Nile is by preventing mosquito bites by draining any standing water and using repellant.
Only one in five humans typically reacts to the virus, with flu-like symptoms. Serious cases can require hospitalization.
