Investigators in Eastern Oregon say snowy conditions likely played a role in yesterday's crash of a tour bus that left nine people dead east of Pendleton. According to Oregon State Police the bus crashed through a guardrail before plummeting at least 200 feet down a steep highway embankment along I-84. At least 26 people were transported to hospitals with a range of injuries.
Oregon State Police Spokesman Gregg Hastings says investigators are still trying to piece together the events that lead to the crash. Investigators are hoping the bus driver could shed some light on what happened.
"That individual survived, but due to the severity of that person's injuries we haven't been able to interview that person," said Hastings. "So we'll have interviews with the other bus occupants and any witnesses that we haven't been able to talk to up until this point in time."
OSP is identifying the bus company as Mi Joo Tour & Travel. The company's based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Oregon State Police Spokesman Gregg Hastings says teams specially trained in rope rescues had to reach the survivors. “Once they were brought back up to the road, those who were injured they identified them based upon the severity of their injuries as to where they would be transported to. And then the victims who were deceased at the scene they were removed later during the afternoon and transported to area funeral homes.”
