Camp Rainbow Gold serves kids and families struggling with cancer in Idaho. Currently, the nonprofit leases from two private camps in the Sawtooth Mountains, and camp officials want to build a permanent location near Ketchum to increase the number of kids who can attend.
But a vocal group of residents in the area have raised concerns about the proposed location of the new camp. They will get the chance to talk directly to county officials Thursday night when camp leaders present plans to obtain a Conditional Use Permit.
In letters submitted to the Blaine County Planning and Zoning Commission, opponents of the new location say campers would face potential wildfire danger and evacuation problems. Others claim they would spoil the remote beauty of the neighborhood by increasing traffic on a road shared with homeowners.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Blaine County had received 447 letters since July - both in support of and against the proposed location.
