A report out this week from the Southern Poverty Law Center finds the number of hate groups went up between 2015 and last year.
According to the center, which tracks incidents of violence and hate, there were 917 bigoted organizations operating in the country last year – up from 892 in 2015. The Southern Poverty Law Center currently monitors 12 hate groups in Idaho.
The groups active in the Gem State range from several anti-Muslim associations sprinkled across the southern portion of the state to an outpost of the Ku Klux Klan in the north. Along with the Klan in northern Idaho, there’s also a holocaust denial group called the Campaign for Radical Truth in History. Statewide, the center says there are two skinhead organizations and a neo-Nazi group.
Most of Idaho’s neighbors have fewer than the state’s 12 hate groups. Nevada has four, Montana 10 and Oregon 11. Washington is the exception; the Evergreen State is home to 21 groups.
