As spring turns the Boise foothills green, thousands of sheep begin their biannual grazing journey eastward.
A band of about 2,000 sheep will cross Idaho Highway 55 at Beacon Light Road Friday afternoon around 3:00 p.m.
From there, they’ll move into the foothills near the Corrals Trailhead by Saturday night and closer to 8th Street by Sunday.
Steve Stuebner, the Idaho Rangeland Resource Commission spokesman, says the public is welcome to watch, but to keep your pets leashed. He says cyclists should also dismount.
“The guard dogs will be antagonized if you ride through the sheep – especially at high speed. So we caution the mountain bikers to get off their bikes and walk through the sheep and that will diffuse the situation,” Stuebner says.
Saturday's Race to Robie Creek will not be affected.
A second band of sheep is expected to follow a similar route in the next week or so.
In the fall, the ewes will return along the path with their wool ready to be shorn.
