A forum in Boise will focus on reform in the Idaho and federal criminal justice systems.

National sentencing reform, Idaho’s Justice Reinvestment Initiative of 2014, as well as other Idaho Department of Correction changes are all topics organizers say will be addressed at the Tuesday night event. The panelists include Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID), as well as Kathy Griesmyer of the ACLU of Idaho and Wayne Hoffman of the Idaho Freedom Foundation. University of Idaho law professor Shaakirrah Sanders will moderate.

Labrador, who has made sentencing reform one of his top priorities, says he wants to see non-violent offenders taken out of prisons and punished and treated in different ways. He’s sponsored legislation to that effect in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“It makes economic sense as a fiscal conservative, but it also makes sense for those individuals and families that are affected by the criminal justice system,” Labrador says.

The event starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center in downtown Boise. It’s free and open to the public.
