Police arrested a man they say stole some 200 vases and plaques from cemeteries across the Treasure Valley.
After receiving a slew of tips from the public, authorities located and arrested the suspected graveyard thief. Twenty-two year old Aspen Curtis was taken into custody by Canyon County Sheriff’s deputies in Nampa.
The deluge of public input came after law enforcement asked residents around the region to be on the lookout for Curtis and to share any information they might have about his whereabouts.
Authorities believe Curtis was involved in the numerous thefts and had been moving around the Treasure Valley, staying at different locations, to avoid detection during the spree.
Around $100,000 worth of brass and bronze vases along with accessories on headstones were stolen from one cemetery in Boise and two in Canyon County. Boise Police Sgt. John Terry says the stolen metal items were likely taken to a recycling center and traded for money.
Curtis was put in the Canyon County Jail after being apprehended and is facing charges of desecrating a grave, burglary, and grand theft.
