A transgender Idaho inmate can begin to get her initial treatment prior to undergoing court-ordered sex reassignment surgery.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals last week partially lifted a stay to allow Adree Edmo to go to doctor’s appointments and get any kind of treatment necessary before she undergoes surgery.

She is diagnosed with gender dysphoria, which can cause major distress related to your physical body not matching your gender identity.
Earlier this year, a panel of 9th Circuit judges ordered the state to provide her with sex reassignment surgery. They said prison officials denied her treatment despite full knowledge of her “ongoing and extreme suffering and medical needs.”
The state is asking the full 9th Circuit to review that ruling. Should that fail, Gov. Brad Little (R) has vowed to appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Edmo is in prison for sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy when she was 22.
Should Edmo undergo surgery, she would be transferred to a state women’s prison for the rest of her sentence, which runs until July 2021.
