The humblest of experiences can be found at St. Luke's Children's Hospital, particularly at Christmastime. The team of caregivers at St. Luke's Kids are as quick with a smile as they are with world-class medical treatment. It's an unfortunate fact that too many children have to spend their holiday in a hospital bed; but as Morning Edition host George Prentice discovered, the spirit of the season is in abundance.
One of the many surprises is St. Luke's so-called "Santa's Toy Box," a huge makeshift toy store where parents of sick children are invited to secretly "shop" for their kids. The gifts are all free, and parents can even select presents for siblings of patients, so they're not left out. Once the toys are selected, they're wrapped by a team of volunteers and delivered to the kids in time for them to experience the joy of Christmas, even while in the hospital.
