This Monday is a day to remember those who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery usually hosts one of the largest Memorial Day ceremonies in the Treasure Valley.
But not this year.
“Although this is a very different Memorial Day, it's still an honor to take the time and remember those who pay the ultimate sacrifice."
That’s James Earp, State Veterans Cemetery Bureau Chief. He said that despite the ceremony getting cancelled, local organizations are working to place American flags at every grave site.
To follow physical distancing guidelines, he said visitors should come in groups of 10 or fewer. He also encouraged family and friends to visit over the weekend to limit crowding on Monday.
“Everyone must do their part," said Earp. "And so if they are visiting within the cemetery to just be courteous of those around them.”
The Idaho Division of Veteran Services, Idaho Public Television and the governor’s office worked together to create videos honoring veterans. Earp said those will air on public television and onlinethroughout this holiday weekend.
