Vacationers are cancelling their trips and residents are preparing for wildfire in a remote northeast Washington tourist village that is accessible only by hiking trail, seaplane and ferry.
The Wolverine Fire is burning just about five miles away from Stehekin and has grown to more than 26,600 acres.
Residents are saddened that one of their favorite historic trout lakes and its guest cabins have already burned.
Helicopters are trying to slow the fire down. Fire trucks are unloading off of ferry boats and horses have been set loose.
Crews are prepping the town for the Wolverine Fire by cutting fire lines and trimming back branches and debris away from buildings.
