Located in downtown Boise's Julia Davis Park, the Idaho State Museum is the official museum of Idaho's history. As early as 1893, the collections of the Idaho State Historical Society were on view in a variety of locations, including Boise City Hall, the Carnegie Library, and the Idaho State Capitol. The Idaho Legislature authorized a new facility in 1939 and the original Idaho State Historical Museum building was completed in 1950. The museum is now undergoing a dramatic expansion to provide more exhibits, artifacts, and programming for visitors of all ages. The newly reimagined Idaho State Museum will reopen in the early fall of 2018.
At this City Club forum, go behind the scenes of the recent $17 million renovation and expansion of the Idaho State Historical Society's, Idaho State Museum. Executive Director Janet Gallimore will speak about how the museum has been designed to be purposeful and intentional in how it presents Idaho's stories and key pieces from the museum's collection of more than 50,000 objects — and how this living embodiment of our city and state’s history will play a key role in how we experience our culture and heritage long into the future.
This project consists of a two story, 35,600 square foot addition to the existing Idaho Historical Museum in Boise. The design includes greatly expanded exhibit space including space for major traveling exhibits, enlarged lobby and retail area, and a 310 seat lecture hall / auditorium.
