The Boise State football team has launched into a season of headlines. From a star starting quarterback to slumping ticket sales, the Broncos are ranked 20th nationally and are 3 and 0 in non-conference play.
Freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier has exceeded expectations for his skills. But it’s also the first time a true Freshman Bronco quarterback started from his first day of the season.
Even with Boise State’s optimistic view of the season, ticket sales to home games continue to drop.
But that may not be hurting its bottom line, veteran sports reporter Dave Southorn told Idaho Matters this week.
He says the school makes $2.9 million a year from a broadcasting deal. That’s almost three times more money than the other schools in the conference pull in.
“It’s a really unique balance that they really benefit from being on TV, but also they want more people to be in the stadium,” Southorn said.
He says despite filling fewer seats, the TV deal has been good for the team, “but also to the cost a little bit of the fan experience,” Southorn said.
The Broncos are now negotiating a new TV deal, which will go into effect next year.
