A building along downtown Boise’s bustling 8th Street is getting a facelift. The home of several downtown restaurants and a nightclub, the Capitol Terrace is in the midst of shedding some years.
It was 1986. Boise’s population was a little over 100,000 and Janet Jackson was at the top of the charts with “When I Think Of You."
Her hit still plays occasionally at The Balcony, one of the many businesses in downtown’s Capitol Terrace. The dated building and parking garage complex on 8th and Main that looks every day of its 32 odd years is set to get a makeover.
Purchased by local developer Hawkins Companies last year, Capitol Terrace will be transformed into Main + Marketplace over the next several months. Along with the new name, the building will get a new look with fresh paint and the addition of some architectural features like awnings and exposed wood.
The $2 million exterior revamp is getting done just before the urban renewal district the building’s situated in dissolves this summer. The Idaho Press reports the city’s urban renewal agency will cover the cost of installing the awnings.
The new look will also bring a change of focus. Hawkins is looking to transform the property into an “experiential retail” space that can draw customers both day and night.
