Bob Kustra Explains Why He's Stepping Down As Boise State University President

Boise State University

Wednesday morning Bob Kustra created waves across the state when he announced he was stepping down from his role as president of Boise State University. The move will take place on June 30, 2018, after 15 years in the office.

Boise State Public Radio had an exclusive opportunity to speak with Dr. Kustra Wednesday afternoon during a leadership retreat at the university. Tom Michael spoke with him on the top floor of the Stueckle Sky Center, with the Broncos marching band playing on the field below.

In this interview, Kustra began by explaining why he is stepping down from the post and how he intends to continue to stay connected to the university. He recalled why he took the job in the first place, back in 2003. He spoke to rising enrollment, particularly from out-of-state residents, as Boise State grew its stature within the state university system.

Kustra talked about the spirit of entrepreneurship in Boise and the many crucial civic partnerships, as well as personal high notes, such as the Fiesta Bowl football win in 2007 and the creation of the College of Innovation and Design. He described the challenge of the state funding formula and the hopes of his leadership team for the transition ahead.
