The Sun Valley Resort has shut down Bald Mountain for fear of extreme avalanche danger.
While the resort has received some 50 inches of snow in just the last few days, warmer temperatures plus winds and freezing rain are making for a dangerous mix. With temperatures above 40 degrees, the situation on the mountainside is touch and go.
Once it's deemed safe, Bald Mountain will be reopened.
The Idaho Statesman says an event of this nature is somewhat rare for Bald Mountain. A spokesperson for the resort tells the paper it's not unusual for the mountain to be closed for a few hours due to avalanche concerns, but the wintry mix of weather combined with the warm temperatures is making for a perilous mix that should be avoided until deemed safe.
The Sawtooth Avalanche Center recommends staying far away from the slopes and says large, natural avalanches are certain. Many roadways through the mountains are shut for fear of slides. Additionally, the Soldier Mountain runs are also closed today as a precaution against avalanches. They're set to reopen Saturday.
