When people in crisis dial the Idaho Suicide Hotline, starting Wednesday, they'll reach someone close to home. The service is marking its second anniversary by expanding to 24-7 coverage.
The hotline was established in 2012 as a way to help address solve a state-wide suicide problem. Idaho has the eighth highest suicide rate in the US, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents in the state.
Volunteers staff the hotline. They have received over 40 hours of training and must commit to one-year's worth of shifts. They are trained to offer emotional support, assess the risk of suicide, and intervene. The next training is on the last day of January.
