A vital link between Boise State University and the heart of the capital city reopens today. The Broadway Bridge, which was constructed in just 9 months at a cost of around 20 million dollars, opens to pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles at 1 p.m.
Around 200 people gathered on the span of the new bridge to mark the opening just a day before the first home game at BSU.
Normally, construction of a bridge this size would take around 2 years, said Julie DeLorenzo, the Idaho Transportation Department board member for the Treasure Valley region. Along with recognizing the companies that helped construct the bridge, DeLorenzo highlighted some of the structure’s features.
"It will have three lanes of traffic each direction," she said. "There are bicycle lanes on each side with a buffer lane. We have 10-foot wide sidewalks on each side, and we have the belvederes where you can stand with your friends and look down at the gorgeous river below."
DeLorenzo also said numerous lighting features will make the bridge stand out at night.
