Camp For Kids With Cancer Considers Options After Blaine County Deals Another Setback

Camp Rainbow Gold

An Idaho camp for kids with cancer was dealt another setback last week. The Blaine County Commission voted against a proposal last Tuesday that would allow Camp Rainbow Gold to build a permanent location in the Wood River Valley. The camp currently leases space each summer from Cathedral Pines, a Baptist camp in the area.

“We were disappointed and saddened by the decision," says Elizabeth Lizberg, the Executive Director of the camp.

She says although there were people in the community that came out in support of Camp Rainbow Gold, there were others in the Wood River Valley who went on record against the proposal. She says most cited noise and traffic concerns. The proposed location is on a two-lane road outside Hailey.

“Though the need for a permanent home for Camp Rainbow Gold and the reasons for looking for that home have not left – this decision does not impact our programming moving forward.”

Lizberg says they’ll continue to lease Cathedral Pines for the 2018 season.

Although the camp’s board has not yet decided their next move, one option at their disposal would be to file suit against the county.
