The reward for information about a January incident in Burley involving a fire and a pipe bomb has been raised.
In the early morning hours of January 29, two buildings in downtown Burley burned to the ground. At a property across the street from the blaze, a pipe bomb was found tucked into the front door.
“Fortunately, because of the construction, and – quite probable the lack of knowledge on the person that constructed it and placed it – it didn’t complete its ignition,” state Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl says.
According to Sandahl, investigators are seeking the public’s help in solving the case. In addition to the $5,000 his office is offering as a reward, the ATF – the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms – is kicking in $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of a suspect.
“We’re looking for what is believed to be a male subject seen on video leaving the premise in great haste,” Sandahl says.
According to the fire marshal, only a handful of calls have come in about the incident. He says the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office is still following up on a truck linked to the downtown event that was found the day after.
Sandahl emphasizes tips can be made to the ATF, or his office by calling 1-877-75-ARSON. Callers can remain anonymous.
