The Sheep Fire has burned more than 110,000 acres
Idaho National Laboratory

Update 07/26/19 9:15 a.m.: The fire, which burned 113,000 acres and was 60% contained on Thursday morning, is expected to be fully contained by Friday evening, according to the INL.

The Sheep Fire, burning on the property of the Idaho National Laboratory, has scorched more than 110,000 acres and is currently the largest wildfire in the lower 48 states. Officials say the fire no longer poses a threat to INL facilities but they still expect it to become the largest fire in INL history.

Boise State Public Radio News South Central Idaho reporter Rachel Cohenspoke with Morning Edition host George Prenticeto update the firewatch at the INL and other wildfires currently burning in the region.

“Each one of our [INL] facilities has a fire break for protection for just this kind of situation. So, we don’t think it would have presented a serious threat to any of our facilities.”
