Blaine County Superintendent Announces Resignation For After Next School Year

McKinsty.com
Blaine County School District Superintendent GwenCarol Holmes announced her plans to retire in June of 2021 on Monday.

Blaine County School District’s controversial superintendent GwenCarol Holmes announced in an email to staff on Monday that she plans to step down in June of next year.

Holmes faced criticism from the publicover the last year, culminating last summer when a citizens’ group organized a failed petition to remove her.

In January, a community-wide survey found about 70% of respondents were “dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” with the superintendent.

The district has been the subject of a few lawsuits in the past year, including a tort claim from a now-former employee that was settled out of court, and an ongoing free speech lawsuit filed by former students.

The Idaho Mountain Express published an excerpt of Holmes’ email, in which she wrote to staff, “I promise you that for the next 14 months, I will be all in as we continue to work together to fulfill the promise to all our students.”

The Blaine County School Board is set to discuss Holmes’ contract during Tuesday's regular school board meeting.
