Treefort Music Fest Puts Spotlight On Podcasts

FiveThirtyEight

The FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast team will host a special live taping during Hackfort, Friday March 24 at 5:00 p.m.

Podcasts are taking over Treefort Music Fest this year. The annual festival – which will host 420 bands – is giving podcast lovers some immersive opportunities during the March 22-26 event.

The first of which is a lively discussion with Marketplace Weekend host Lizzie O’Leary, Thursday 4:00 p.m. at the Owyhee. O’Leary will share examples from her radio experience, highlighting the advantages of using sound to tell impactful stories about the economy. (Full disclosure: this free event is hosted by Boise State Public Radio, which broadcasts Marketplace Weekend Saturdays at 6 p.m.) The national reporter and host will also talk about how the explosion of podcasts is giving traditional radio journalists new ways to reach their audience.

Hackfort will host a Friday morning (11 a.m. in the Loft Room at JUMP) ‘how-to’ with the acclaimed FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast team. If you want to get your own RSS feed up and running, “How To Launch Your Own Podcast” is not to be missed. The FiveThirtyEight podcast launched in January 2016 as a lead-up to the presidential election and has a loyal following. After Nate Silver and crew share their podcasting insights, Hackfort will present a special live taping of the podcast Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Egyptian. Any Hackfort badge holders ($30) will be able to check it out, but if you don’t have a tech festival pass you can still buy separate tickets to the event for $25.

Saturday is a big day for local podcasts, with two free events going down. Boise State Public Radio podcaster Adam Cotterell will host “Podcasting Place: Telling Local Stories Through Podcasts” at the Owyhee (Treefort gallery) 2:00 p.m. Right after (3 p.m.), Boise comedian and Red Sox fanatic Matthew Melton will show off his skills during a live podcast taping of That Baseball Show.

Round out your Treefort podcasting experience with a special free taping of The Future of What, a music industry show. Host Portia Sabin – president of indie label Kill Rock Stars – will chat with experts about shifts in the music business during this live podcast event Sunday, March 26th 12:00 p.m. at the Owyhee.
