The first big winter storm of the season is headed for southern Idaho. The National Weather Service in Boise says a storm is moving in from the Pacific and will bring rain first and then snow.
Josh Smith is a meteorologist in Boise. He says the rain will start Tuesday night in the Treasure Valley. “And then that will be switching to snow probably around 7 or 8 a.m., maybe a little bit later than that, and then we’ll see up to an inch of snow in the Boise Metro area,” Smith says.
Most of the snow will hit Wednesday.
“It’s going to be here tomorrow mostly and into Thursday. It’ll be the first big winter system we’ve had in this region for this season,” says Smith.
Mountain Home could see 2 to 4 inches. Twin Falls could get 3 to 6 inches. And Smith says mountains on the Nevada border will get 4 to 10 inches.
“If you’re traveling Wednesday night through Thursday, you’re going to encounter a lot of snow on I-84, basically from Mountain Home through wherever you’re going, Pocatello or Salt Lake, there’s going to be a lot of snow that direction. So basically if you’re going south, you’ll see some weather.”
Forecasters predict the storm will last through Thanksgiving morning.
Smith says after the storm, temperatures will drop well below normal. Typical lows this time of year in Boise should be around 30 degrees, but by Friday the lows will drop to 10 degrees and last into the weekend.
