Ski Resorts Open Across Idaho

Sun Valley Resort
Sun Valley Resort will open at least five lifts and 10 runs on its opening day.

Bogus Basin was the first ski resort in Idaho to open some terrain on Fridays through Sundays a couple weeks ago. This week more lifts around the state will start running.

Sun Valley will kick off its 84th season on Thanksgiving. Skiers will have access to at least five lifts and 10 runs on opening day.

This year, Sun Valley joined the Epic pass, which allows holders to ski and snowboard at resorts in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Epic also has partner resorts in Europe and Asia. Sun Valley will be looking to see how that membership affects its visitation numbers.

Sun Valley allows skiers to hike up and come down before and after operating hours. But as this activity has increased in popularity, the resort is now restricting uphill skiing to designated routes. Dogs are not allowed to join anymore, and these skiers must wear reflective gear and headlamps.

Other resorts opening this week include Schweitzer Mountain, Pomerelle Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort.

Clarification: The word "backcountry" was removed from this article and audio because this activity happens within the bounds of Sun Valley Resort.
