How Idaho Could Begin Rationing Medical Care During This Deadly Phase Of COVID-19

Intermountain Healthcare

Our health care workers are spread thin and are struggling at times to keep up with the crush of COVID-19 patients filling our hospitals. On Friday, the Idaho Board of Health and Welfare authorized a new rule which sets up standards for how Idaho health care workers may soon have to ration care, in essence deciding which patients get treated first and who will be last to get treated — if at all.

At the same time, Idaho passed another grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic recording more than 100,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19. And with a surge in cases comes an uptick in deaths associated with the virus: there are more than 1,100 families mourning the loss of a loved one from COVID-19.

Idaho Statesman reporter Audrey Dutton has been reporting on the crisis standards of care and joins Idaho Matters now to tell us more.
