Idahoans Are Fleeing To — And Endangering — Rural Mountain Towns With The Coronavirus

Idaho Statesman
Owyhee County and other rural Idaho areas have seen an influx of visitors fleeing coronavirus hot spots — and potentially spreading the virus.";

Governor Brad Little’s stay home order banned discretionary travel, but some rural communities are still frustrated with visitors coming into their towns. For folks in towns like McCall and Riggins, this influx of visitors is dangerous.

The Idaho Statesman’s Nicole Blanchard told Idaho Matters about the concerns she’s been hearing from anxious residents of these towns: “What is going to happen to those of us who are here all the time, that don't have the means to head somewhere else if there is a really big outbreak?”

Residents and town leadership worry that even asymptomatic visitors will carry the virus into town.

Small town medical services also aren’t equipped to treat a cluster of cases, which medical experts say is a big possibility because of community spread in the state.

As COVID-19 cases spread through the U.S. and Idaho, we’re committed to keeping you updated and informed. You can get updated info on cases, closures and how to stay healthy at any time on our Coronavirus news blog.

Idaho Matters is working on a story about how families are dealing with school closures during the coronavirus outbreak. Parents: What do your days look like now? Are you creating structure, or are you letting your kids have an extended spring break? Kids: What do you like about being at home, and what do you miss about school and being with your friends? Using your smartphone, please send us a voice memo with your family. Tell us about your daily routine, or about what your’e doing to stay distracted or learning. Send the voice memo to idahomatters@boisestate.edu. We might use your message in an upcoming show.
