Join local professor and historian Bob Reinhardt for a discussion on the human history behind the West's hydropower landscape. Throughout the twentieth century, hundreds of communities across the American West vanished beneath reservoirs — displaced by massive dam projects built for irrigation, hydroelectricity, and flood control. As part of our Keep Boise Cool Energy and Buildings series, Bob will explore how displaced communities responded to their removal, what was lost, and what it means to call the West home.

Throughout history, artists have used their voices to challenge injustice, demand change, and transform public outrage into shared work to build just and joyful communities. Join us for an evening of restoration, unsilencing, and inspiration.

On September 10th, from 6:00–8:00 p.m., the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights will host “Speak Up! The Art of Justice,” an evening of storytelling, music, and conversation centered on finding your voice and speaking truth in honor of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Featured storytellers include Mitch Wieland (Idaho Writer-in-Residence), Maggie Koger, Rebecca Evans, Hannah Rodabaugh, Caleb Merritt, Matt Bunk, and many others. Musical performances will be provided by retro-country singer and guitarist Bill Coffey.

The event will also feature a Q&A with Idaho nonprofits about their work to advance justice across the Treasure Valley and a Blind Date With A Book table sponsored by Rediscovered Books.

This event is free, accessible, and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

The Boise Women’s Art Group is a monthly, in-person gathering created for women who want a welcoming, supportive space to explore creativity, connection, and self-expression through art. No pressure. No judgment. Let’s create something meaningful together!

ABOUT YOUR HOST:

Danica Factor is a local artist based in the Boise area. Her artist journey began in 2018. She started an art practice as a way to heal from childhood emotional trauma and found a deep love for creativity and helping others find their way back to themselves through art.

Danica has showcased her work at a number of art shows in Idaho and is a member of the Art Source Gallery. Her work has also been featured in Arts to Hearts Magazine, Art & Soul of the Magic Valley, the local Channel 7 News and shown at countless exhibits across the state.

Lala’s Jazz Double Bill: The Double Bass Trio & Naama
NYC jazz vocalist Naama and Alex Sjobeck’s one-of-a-kind two-bass piano trio come together for a double bill of timeless standards and modern jazz exploration.

The Double Bass Trio
The Double Bass Trio brings a fresh and unexpected voice to the modern jazz landscape with a unique instrumentation of two upright basses—Renaud Boucher-Browning and Braun Khan—and pianist Alex Sjobeck. Their repertoire features original compositions and imaginative arrangements that seamlessly weave together the harmonic depth of classical music with the rhythmic vitality and improvisation of jazz. Under the mentorship of renowned bassist John Clayton, Sjobeck leads the trio in crafting music that speaks to fans of both genres, offering a rich listening experience that bridges the concert hall and the jazz club. The trio will be recording this repertoire in Los Angeles in October, making this performance a special opportunity to experience the music before it is captured for an upcoming release.

Naama
Inspired by the emotionally direct compositions of great composers and lyricists of the 1940’s and ‘50’s Naama has established herself as a prominent voice in the New York City jazz scene. Possessed with an urbane and elegant sound Naama’s sensitive interpretation and crisp phrasing have become recognizable elements of her signature style and timeless appeal.

Naama will present music from her new album Songs From the Road– a collection of timeless jazz standards about adventure, longing, romance, and the search for home- brought to life through intimate storytelling, and fresh interpretations inspired by life on tour.

Boise Art Museum’s Art in the Park is widely recognized as one of the premiere cultural events in the Northwest. This open-air festival, held on the weekend following Labor Day each September, provides visitors of all ages and interests with the opportunity to meet more than 240 artists and purchase their works. During the three-day event, Boise Art Museum presents a variety of contemporary arts and crafts along with an exceptional array of live entertainment, wonderful food, and hands-on activities for children.

Even if you don't need guidance, there will be a Cat Clay staff member available in all sessions to provide support and answer questions!

Lamont Lyons states: When I go out with my camera, I don’t ask myself what can I take a photograph of, but rather what I will be given. Minor White, a noted photographer and teacher, said “One should not only photograph things for what they are, but for what else they are”. Often, I see in my mind’s eye something very different from the ordinary view. I might compose from a different angle; I might imagine it in high contrast black and white or with colors manipulated in unexpected ways. In the end, the photograph becomes something seen differently or ‘for what else it is’. It is a whole in itself. It does not require interpretation of explanation, leaving plenty of room for ambiguity and wonder. As you view each photograph in this exhibition, I invite you to just be there with it. Be still. Live with it a few moments. Perhaps you will feel the joy I felt while making it.
